Information about Parent/Child Dedications
As Christians we recognize that everything we have belongs to God. Our children belong to Him as well. Dedication is not the salvation of a child, but a public expression of the fact that he or she belongs to the Lord. This “setting apart” is an act by the parents, a prayerful declaration of their stewardship over God’s child. The parents in essence are agreeing to do everything in their power to see that child grow up to respect and honor God and to love and serve Jesus Christ.
The act of dedicating children to the Lord is evident in scripture. I Samuel 1: 10, 11 says,
“ In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the Lord. And she made a vow saying, O Lord Almighty if you will only look upon your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant, but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life….”
In verse 26-28 we read,
“As surely as you live , My Lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of Him. So now, I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord. “
As we know, Jesus also placed a very high priority on children. Mark 10:13-16 says:
“People were bringing little children to Jesus to have Him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, He was indignant. He said to them, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. And He took the children in his arms, put His hands on them and blessed them.”
Parent/ Child dedication is more than a ritual. It is a commitment on the part of the parents to honor the will and word of God. Parents will be asked:
To publicly affirm their personal faith in Christ and renew their dedication to Him and His word.
To pray daily for God’s direction in their lives and the lives of their children.
To teach their children the truths of God’s word in their homes.
To anticipates and seek to lead their children to a personal faith in Christ as soon as they are ready.
To recognize that their children belong to God and have been born to experience His love and to serve him.
Parent/Child Dedication services are held 3-4 times a per year at Lakewood. If you would like to participate in one, please contact Kelli in the Children's Ministries Office at kbeveridge@fbcol.org
